In the business area “Energy” GFA offers consultancy services related to sustainable energy and sustainable energy finance with a focus on renewable energy and energy efficiency. Our services include advice on the improvement of the legal and institutional framework, energy sector studies, development of sustainable energy action plans, capacity building for energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies in private and public sectors, as well as the preparation and management of project pipelines for the implementation of sustainable energy measures.

For our head office in Hamburg, Germany, we are currently looking for an open-minded and versatile Consultant (m/f/d) to join our Energy team in our Energy Department .

The consultant (m/f/d) will be responsible for project management, acquisition and business development in the technical field of sustainable energy.

Key responsibilities will include: 
  • Acquisition of new projects, including elaboration and coordination of technical and financial proposals 
  • Fully responsible management of projects and studies (backstopping) on site and Hamburg-based which includes technical backstopping and project management (financial and technical administration, monitoring and evaluation of projects and studies)
  • Establishment and maintaining regular professional contacts as well as networking with donor agencies, beneficiaries, partner companies or institutions, subcontractors and experts
  • Conducting technical short-term consultancy missions including participation in feasibility and project preparatory studies 
  • Elaboration of reports, concepts and presentations as well as contribution to knowledge and quality management.
  • Active contribution to the further development of the thematic area renewable energy, energy efficiency and green economy within the Energy Department and in thematic working groups
  • Representing GFA in conferences and seminars
Required qualifications and skills:
  • University degree (MA) in a relevant such as engineering, economics, environmental sciences, development studies with focus on energy sector
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience in at least one area GFA provides services in the energy sector
  • Profound knowledge of EU and/or international policies, strategies and framework conditions for promotion of energy efficiency and renewable energies, including market-based instruments
  • Understanding of socio-economic aspects of sustainable energy/energy efficiency and economic assessment of energy related projects
  • At least a basic understanding of applied technologies in the area of renewable energies and energy efficiency
  • Working experience in developing countries and/or threshold countries.  Experience in  Subsaharan Africa and/or Middle East/North Africa is an asset
  • Familiarity with the German (GIZ, KfW) and European development sector (e.g. EuropeAid, EIB, EBRD); a profound understanding of the strategies and policies of the relevant donor agencies will be an asset
  • Full proficiency in written and spoken English and working knowledge of German is a prerequisite; at least intermediate level in French (B1) is considered a  strong asset;
  • Excellent organisation skills, client oriented communication, demanding in terms of own working standards, social competence, stress resistance 
  •  Willingness to travel extensively to the countries within Africa and Middle East region
  • Strong writing, communication and presentation skills
  •  Advanced proficiency in Standard MS office applications
  • Ability to manage complex situations with a sense of pragmatism
  • Ability to work in intercultural teams
