The Customer Supply (Industrial Merchant Bulk) is responsible to ensure a reliable supply of its external and internal customers with bulk products in airgases and hydrogen for the perimeter of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Based on telemetry datas received in the transport planning system about the demand of each single customer, dispatchers are managing the deliveries under consideration of optimal distribution costs to ensure a cost-efficient and reliable distribution with ~175 airgas tank trailers and ~100 hydrogen trailers, driving ~22 Mio. kilometers per year. The optimal distribution costs are not only depending on the transport costs, but are also depending on the geographical structure and footprint of the production plants, site-specific production costs and the customer concentration and customer allocation to those production sites. Therefore, the optimization of the customer supply is going beyond pure trip planning, taking into account many more variables.

Presentation of the team

The centralized Customer Supply is structured in 4 areas with in total 44 persons: Dispatch (25); Carrier & Contract Manager (9); Fleet Management (6); Business Analysts (2)

Mission description

In the hydrogen business, there are possibilities to deliver customers.
  • Swap-trailer delivery: customer has no storage tank and takes product directly from a trailer. Therefore, the trailer stays at the customer site for a certain period and an exchange is scheduled based on the customer demand full vs. empty (Trailer is the storage). The size and capacity of the trailer (200bar / 300bar) determines the autonomy of the customer and the delivery frequency of the customer.
  • Dispoz-Customer: customer has a storage tank and consumes product from the tank. The delivered quantity is thus limited by the storage tank size and working pressure. Depending on the storage capacity, the right trailer needs to be chosen for this delivery under consideration if the customer is combined in the trip with other customers (milkrun).
Due to the difference of the supply options the choice of the right trailer and customer-allocation is key to gain efficiencies.

Key mission is to achieve transparency of our hydrogen business in terms of dispatch performance, trailer-customer allocation and the usage rate of our trailers in order to optimize the fleet size and to identify the need for investment decisions and thus the trailer size in case of fleet extension to integrate this in the S&OP process for the dynamic and increasing hydrogen business.

  • Creating of KPI-Reports in Power-BI and data base
  • Process for monitoring usage of trailers and allocation of trailers to filling plants and customers
  • Analyzing dispatch performance to identify potential for improvement
  • Coaching of the dispatchers
